Behind the Scenes: 2017 Spring/Summer Photo Shoot

Find out who and what is behind the shoot of the BIRKENSTOCK 2017 Spring/Summer collection. You can also get a behind-the-scenes glimpse of the London shoot in our making-of video.

The Photographer: Dan Tobin Smith

Many people are familiar with the work of Dan Tobin Smith without knowing it. This British photographer has made a name for himself with his unique style and, in recent years, has worked for world-famous brands, musicians and magazines, including Apple, Louis Vuitton and Wallpaper*.
Smith’s specialties are still lifes and installations. Although he garnered considerable attention for his album cover of The Blueprint 3 by rapper Jay Z, this experienced photographer has long been internationally renowned, chiefly due to his experimental series of letter installations, Alphabetical, from which the Jay Z cover takes its inspiration.

London Calling: in the Studio

Dan Tobin Smith’s next project was to showcase the 2017 Spring/Summer collection from BIRKENSTOCK. The shoot took place in January 2017 at his London studio, which is located near a canal in the east of the fashion capital. The studio, where the artist usually creates his impressive installations, served as the backdrop to BIRKENSTOCK icons such as the Arizona, Gizeh and Boston. Alongside these classic models, new favorites such as the Pasadena and Bartlett closed-toe shoes also had their moment in the limelight.

Classics Presented in Style

Still life expert Smith and his team developed a new visual language for BIRKENSTOCK, working under the art direction of Delerue Roppel. The products are in focus and shown only in carefully cropped detail. Logos on the shoes subtly indicate the manufacturer, whether on buckles, soles or laces. The shots underline the expert craftsmanship, elegance and sophisticated details of the BIRKENSTOCK collection.
