BIRKENSTOCK ZÜRICH: A BRIEF HISTORY
Launched in 1964 as a closed sandal, the Zürich was initially named the CLOSED MODEL. Featuring a broad upper fixed to the foot with twin buckle straps, it provided a secure and snug fit for both indoor and outdoor wear. This was only the second product to incorporate the iconic BIRKENSTOCK footbed, following the introduction of the first-ever BIRKENSTOCK sandal – the Madrid – just a year earlier. The anatomically shaped cork-latex footbed was left exposed, clearly showcasing its functionality.
The Zürich was a groundbreaking new creation – a sandal that could appeal to any gender or age group. For BIRKENSTOCK, Zürich represented a dynamic vision of a future, showcasing how the iconic footbed could be integrated into daily life in a more functional manner. Compared to the minimalist design of the Madrid, the sturdy leather upper of the Zürich allowed for a more versatile application of the footbed.
Fun fact: Contrary to popular belief, the Zürich was not an evolution of the Arizona. In fact, the two-strap Arizona was launched in 1973, nine years after the Zürich.

At the core is our signature cork-latex footbed, which has been perfected over decades to support every curve and contour of your foot. This footbed promotes a natural walking motion and distributes weight and pressure evenly, ensuring all-day comfort.
The footbed is made from high-quality natural materials including natural cork, natural latex and jute, and the lining is made from breathable suede, which helps to regulate temperature and wick away moisture, keeping your feet cool and dry. The sole is made from EVA – a lightweight, elastic material with extremely good cushioning. It smooths out slight irregularities in the floor and ensures that every step is softly cushioned.
The broad upper is also made from suede, which hugs the foot like a second skin. It is secured with twin buckle straps, which provide a secure and customisable fit for every foot size and shape.
These features collectively make the Zürich sandal comfortable and supportive – even on the longest of days.
