RESEARCH AND DEVELOPMENT
The central pillar of the BIRKENSTOCK NATURAL SKIN CARE active ingredient concept is a multi-active cork oak complex.
The cork oak extract, exclusively developed for BIRKENSTOCK NATURAL SKIN CARE, is a 100% natural, active bio-lipid complex, that is made by extracting cork oak and coconut oil. The raw materials are sustainably sourced. The effects of the complex have been proven through clinical studies.
The cork oak extract was tested in various scientific studies prior to its inclusion in skincare products. The testing stage evaluated its impact on connective cell tissue, or dermal fibroblasts (in vitro), as well as the effect of product use on the skin (in vivo). All of the results confirmed a positive anti-aging effect. Furthermore, it was proven to increase skin hydration, strengthening the skin’s protective barrier and improving skin smoothness.

IN VITRO STUDY: THE ANTI-AGING EFFECT OF THE EXTRACT
A scientific study helped to investigate the anti-aging effect of cork oak extract in a concentration of 0.2% on fibroblasts (connective tissue cells). The result: cork oak extract is proven to have a positive effect on growth factors and anti-aging genes in cells. Furthermore, it has an antioxidant effect.
IN-VIVO STUDY: SKIN MOISTURIZATION
A clinical trial with 30 subjects aged 24 to 65 has shown that: When using the INTENSIVE MOISTURIZING CREAM twice daily over the course of 28 days, the skin’s moisture content improves by 51.4% compared to using a placebo cream.
IN VIVO STUDY: PROTECTIVE SKIN BARRIER
In a clinical study, 23 subjects aged 20 to 57 used the cream with 1% cork oak extract over a period of 9 days. The result indicates a significant reduction in transepidermal water loss by 46.3%. As a result the skin’s moisture barrier is improved, and its protective function is significantly strengthened.
IN VIVO STUDY: SKIN SMOOTHNESS
A clinical study with 23 subjects aged 20 to 57 tested the effect of a cream with 1% cork oak extract over a total period of 9 days, after being applied twice daily. The result: improved, smoother and more even skin texture by 7% in comparison to the placebo.
